Leeds Information
Leeds is a haven for shoppers. From exlusive designer fashions at Harvey Nichols and Strand, to a huge choice of books at Borders you're sure to find what you want. Music fans can also shop at the legendary Jumbo Records and Crash, or you can browse for unique gifts in the Corn Exchange. Built in 1865 by Cuthbert Brodrick to house the City's Corn Exchange, the building has been recently renovated and there is now a myriad of specialist shops and restaurants. Buy everything from snowboards to original works of art.
Historically a centre for trade and famous for manufacturing and engineering excellence, the city of Leeds has grown into the region's thriving commercial capital. The city offers metropolitan facilities with easy access to beautiful countryside. Leeds serves a population of about one million and has an extensive range of shopping, recreation and entertainment facilities. There is a lively music scene, with live bands in many pubs and no end of clubs for dancing. Leeds has a new theatre, the West Yorkshire Playhouse, with its own theatre company. There is also the Grand Theatre, which, with the Alhambra in nearby Bradford, hosts touring companies presenting everything from Shakespeare to Andrew Lloyd Webber. Fans of opera, ballet and modern dance will also find much to interest them in Leeds and the surrounding area - notably Opera North and the Northern Ballet Theatre both resident in the city. Film buffs can visit several independent cinemas as well as the usual chains.
Leeds is also a great sporting town. Famous names in football, cricket and rugby league are based here, and the city's sporting heritage is reflected in the many smaller clubs and teams in the area.
For many people the situation of Leeds is one of its greatest attractions. It is within easy reach of some of the most scenic parts of Britain: the National Parks of the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District, the Lake District and the North Yorks. Moors. All provide excellent outdoor recreational facilities. Walkers can tackle the Three Peaks and the Dales Way, or settle for an afternoon stroll on Ilkley Moor followed by tea and buns. Rock climbers will find plenty of interesting problems on the nearby crags; Yorkshire gritstone and limestone challenge the best in the world. Getting to the hills is no problem: buses that pass the University take you to nearby crags, and student societies organise weekends farther afield, perhaps based at one of the University huts in the Lake District and the Pennines.
The neighbouring historic towns and cities such as York, Harrogate, Ripon and Bradford, together with great country houses such as Harewood and Castle Howard and the ancient Cistercian Abbeys of Kirkstall, Bolton, Rievaulx and Fountains offer opportunities to explore the cultural and industrial history of the region.
